2.) Server News # 1: New operating systems – Debian 7.2 and Ubuntu 13.10
** Debian 7.2 **
The Debian project has released the second update of the stable-releases „Wheezy“. In this context we offer a minimal installation image in „Standard“ and „RAID1“ in the EUserv customer panel. Debian 7.2 mainly comes with security fixes and critical bug fixes. As usual, the available packages do not include any updates, only relevant bugs and security holes have been closed.
These bug fixes affect a total of 100 packages (including curl, nmap, openvpn, php5 and perl). In addition to Ubuntu 12.04 a LTS kernel (3.2.51) is used, which is not officially supported in any way until 2016.
** Ubuntu 13.10 **
Before the release of the next LTS next April, the developer of Ubuntu have released version 13.10 („Saucy Salamander“). 13.10 of the popular Linux distribution is available as an installation for all dedicated servers in the customer panel. In addition to the standard installation a RAID1 version can be selected.
„Saucy Salamander“ was simultaneously presented with OpenStack’s new version of „Havana“. 13.10 Ubuntu Server is running on a kernel 3.11 and comes with some updates. These include Qemu in version 1.5.0 and the virtualization library „libvirt“ in version 1.1.1. Apache 2.4 with PHP 5.5 scripting language comes as standard as a web server. For the first time the openVZ-like virtualisation solution LXC („Linux Containers“) is included.
Regarding the support, „Saucy Salamander“ takes over the policy of its predecessor: The non-LTS versions are now supplied with updates in 9 instead of the previous 18 months. „Saucy Salamander“ will appear in the „end-of-life“ status three months after the next LTS release.
More features:
– Qemu 1.5.0, libvirt 1.1.1
– Apache 2.4, PHP 5.5
– Managing Linux Containers (LXC) with Juju
– OpenStack in version 2013.2
– Python 3.3

3.) Server News # 2: FreeBSD 9.2 available
With the release of FreeBSD 9.2 („Nakatomi Socrates“), it can now be installed as a 32 – or 64-bit version on a dedicated server via the customer panel. The new production release primarily provides support for SSD’s and their better integration with ZFS file systems. ZFS supports TRIM by default for SSD garbage collection. In addition, the compression with the LZ4 algorithm is now supported in any way for ZFS. Furthermore, the system analysis tool DTrace has been updated to version 1.9.0. In terms of hardware support, there are also new features for Intel’s Gigabit Ethernet Driver „ixgbe“ and „e1000“. On the software side FreeBSD 9.2 still brings updates for OpenSSH, OpenSSL, awk and sendmail.
More features:
– ZFS supports TRIM for SSD’s
– Support for virtio drivers in the kernel
– Support for LZ4 compression in ZFS
– Update the Intel Gigabit Ethernet Driver
– Numerous software updates
